History of the BMW 3.0 CSi

The BMW E9 was marketed in October 1968 with the 2800 CS having an engine six cylinders of 2800 Cm3 and 170 CH. It replaces the range 2000 C/CS. It differs from it by its front face, due to the extension of the driving compartment to accomodate new the 6 cylinders on line, inherited trucks 2500/2800. This engine, standard M30, will make much for the fame of BMW. Its last descent will be the engine of M5 in 1995. As for its devancière the E9 frame is assembled in the famous Karmann carriage-builder.

In 1971 , BMW replace the 2800 CS by the 3.0 CS been driven by an engine of 3000 Cm3 to carburettor of 180 CH and the 3.0 CSL of 215 CH. It always has gear box with 4 speeds, but it receives a assisted direction and especially 4 brakes discs which were cruelly lacking with the preceding version. A few months later the 3.0 CSi with an electronic injection and 200 CH comes to reinforce the range. The CSL receives also this electronic injection.

In 1972 , the coupe CS E9 appears in the German comedy "Ein Käfer gibt Vollgas". It is led by the hero of film, interpreted by Joachim Fuchsberger, which is a police inspector pursueing of the criminals.

The height of the version cut CS E9 is reached with the CSL "light-weight" which is reduced of 200 kg, thanks to doors and a cap in alumunium, and by reduced interior equipment. It will be used as a basis for an engagement in competition. This version of competition is been driven by an engine of 3500 Cm3 360 CH. It wins many victories.

With the end of the year 1973 the CSL receives a new engine of 206 CH.

In 1974 , the 2.5 CS reinforces the range with one 2500 Cm3 of 150 CH.

In 1975 , BMW launches a program baptized "Art and car" which gives rise to specimens of the 3.0 CSL painted by known artists.

The production of all these models stops in December 1975, the last vehicles being delivered in 1976 .
